ISKCON alleges temple burned, deities destroyed, accuses Govt of neglecting minorities

In a disturbing development, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) reported that its Namhatta Centre in Dhaka was destroyed in a fire early Saturday morning. ISKCON's Kolkata vice president, Radharamn Das, alleged the incident was a deliberate attack targeting Hindu minorities in Bangladesh.

In a post on X, Das stated, "ISKCON Namhatta Centre burned down in Bangladesh. The deities of Sri Sri Laxmi Narayan and all items inside the temple were burned down completely. The centre is located in Dhaka." He added that the fire was started between 2-3 AM by lifting the temple's tin roof and igniting it with petrol or octane.

The Namhatta Centre, situated in Dhour village under Turag Police Station in Dhaka district, housed deities of Sri Sri Radha Krishna and Sri Sri Mahabhagya Lakshmi Narayan, which were entirely destroyed. Das criticized the Bangladesh authorities, claiming that despite repeated pleas, little has been done to ensure the safety of minorities.

Attacks on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh have reportedly surged since the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, took over following Sheikh Hasina's ouster in August. Protests erupted in Dhaka, with hundreds of Bangladeshi Hindus condemning the government’s inability to curb the violence.

India has expressed concern over the deteriorating safety of minorities in Bangladesh. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the Bangladeshi government's responsibility to protect all citizens, stating, “The primary responsibility for the protection of life and liberty of all citizens of Bangladesh, including minorities, rests with the Government of Bangladesh.”

The recent months have witnessed multiple attacks on ISKCON properties. The arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das on November 25 further ignited tensions. Demonstrations erupted after Das was denied bail, with one protest in Chattogram resulting in the death of an assistant government prosecutor.
