A violent incident occurred on Sunday in the Basudebpur Adhikaripada area of Magra, Hooghly, when villagers attacked police officers who had arrived to execute an arrest warrant. The police were attempting to arrest two individuals in connection with a case from 2023, based on a court-issued arrest warrant. As the officers attempted to carry out the arrest, a group of villagers surrounded their vehicle. Tensions escalated when the villagers allegedly vandalized the police vehicle and physically attacked the officers. Three police personnel were reported injured during the incident.
In response to the attack, the police mobilized additional forces and arrested eleven individuals from the area for their involvement in obstructing police work and assaulting officers. Those arrested were identified as Tonesh Ghosh, Sujit Adhikari, Kaushik Goswami, Debashish Sarkar, Debesh Adhikari, Kunal Adhikari, Gautam Biswas, Amar Sarnakar, Prosenjit Pal, Bankim Ghosh, and Bhaskar Das. They face charges of obstructing police duties and assaulting law enforcement personnel.
After their arrest, the suspects were taken to the Chuchura court on Monday for legal proceedings. Police sources have confirmed that an investigation into the incident is ongoing. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the confrontation, including any potential motives behind the villagers’ actions. The incident is under review as part of a broader effort to ensure the enforcement of court orders and maintain law and order in the region.
