CM Mamata cautions TMC MLAs over controversial remarks, emphasizes party discipline

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently addressed concerns over remarks made by two prominent Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislators, Siddiqullah Chowdhury and Narayan Goswami, during a meeting with the TMC legislative party. The discussion focused on maintaining party discipline and responding to comments that had attracted controversy.

Siddiqullah Chowdhury, a senior minister in the state government, made a statement in the state Assembly that raised eyebrows. While speaking, he referred to the need for increased population growth to "compete with China," using the phrase “Ham Do, Hamra Char” (we are two, and we are four) in this context. His remarks were interpreted by many as a reference to population control and its implications for the country’s strength. Chowdhury later clarified that his comment was meant to emphasize the importance of population growth for competing globally, especially with China. The statement triggered sharp reactions from opposition parties, including the BJP, which questioned the relevance of the remark and whether it was appropriate in the current socio-political environment.

In addition to addressing Chowdhury's comments, Mamata Banerjee also cautioned another TMC MLA, Narayan Goswami, regarding his political activities. Goswami had been involved in matters outside his own constituency, prompting Mamata to advise him to focus his efforts within his designated area. The Chief Minister made it clear that Goswami should refrain from interfering in other regions, stressing the need for party members to stay within the boundaries of their responsibilities.

Mamata Banerjee’s remarks underscored the importance of maintaining unity within the TMC and ensuring that all party members align with the party's official positions. She advised legislators to be mindful of their public statements, especially in light of upcoming political developments. The Chief Minister’s actions reflect her ongoing efforts to manage internal discipline within the TMC as it prepares for future electoral challenges in the state.
