Youth dies after alleged beating at South Garia drug rehab, family vandalizes centre in protest
On November 26, 2024, a case was registered at Haridevpur Police Station based on a complaint from Avijit Das, a resident of Sodepur Road, Mandir Bari, Haridevpur, Kolkata. The complaint details a disturbing incident involving his former maid, Sanju Sarkar, and her husband, Baidyanath Sarkar. The complainant alleges that around the evening of November 26, the couple entered his home and, under the pretext of giving medicine, forced his elderly mother and ailing wife to consume an unknown chemical substance. The couple reportedly planned to steal valuables, including items from an almirah and locker at the residence.
Following the complaint, local police initiated an investigation. Baidyanath Sarkar was arrested on the evening of November 26, 2024, and Sanju Sarkar was taken into custody the next morning, November 27, 2024. During their interrogations, Sanju Sarkar reportedly confessed to her involvement in the crime and led police to a search of her residence. The search resulted in the recovery of ₹2 lakh from an almirah in her home, which is believed to have been stolen from the complainant’s house.
The case has been recorded under sections 109 (abetment), 123 (criminal conspiracy), 305 (attempted murder), and 61(2) (possession of stolen property) of the BNS Act. The investigation continues, with police analyzing the recovered money and statements from both accused. Authorities are working to determine the full extent of the conspiracy, including any further stolen items. The police are also considering whether additional charges should be filed against the suspects. The case is still under active investigation as authorities gather more evidence.
