Jammu and Kashmir hit by 5.8 magnitude earthquake, no casualties reported
A violent clash erupted on Monday night between two factions of the royal family of Udaipur, leading to stone pelting outside the City Palace. The conflict began after Vishvaraj Singh Mewar, the newly crowned 77th Maharana of Mewar and BJP MLA from Rajsamand, was denied entry into the palace. Vishvaraj Singh and his supporters gathered outside the gates of the City Palace, where they were stopped from entering by members of the opposing faction, led by his cousin, Dr. Lakshay Raj Singh Mewar, and their uncle, Arvind Singh Mewar.
The disagreement quickly escalated when Vishvaraj Singh’s supporters began throwing stones at those inside the palace. Those inside retaliated, intensifying the standoff. The violence occurred after Vishvaraj Singh Mewar’s coronation as the Maharana of Mewar, which had sparked tensions within the royal family. The altercation is believed to have been related to issues of succession and control over family assets, including sacred sites such as the Dhuni Mata Temple.
District Collector Arvind Kumar Poswal reassured the public that the law and order situation had been brought under control. He mentioned that discussions were taking place between the palace representatives and society representatives, and that some issues had been resolved, while talks continued on others. "The law and order situation is well under control," Poswal said. The district administration moved swiftly to address the situation, intervening to prevent further escalation.
In addition to managing the standoff, the district administration took the disputed Dhuni Mata Temple site into receivership. The temple has been at the center of the family dispute, with both factions claiming control over it. Poswal confirmed that the administration had assumed control of the temple site to prevent further conflict. He also stated that if either faction wished to file a case related to the incident, it would be registered.
The royal family’s internal strife, which came to a head during the confrontation, has been brewing for some time. Disputes over leadership and family property, particularly sacred sites like the Dhuni Mata Temple, have contributed to the ongoing tensions. The recent coronation of Vishvaraj Singh as Maharana of Mewar has only exacerbated these issues, further dividing the family. The district administration continues to monitor the situation, and efforts are underway to resolve the underlying disputes without further violence.
