In Siliguri, market prices for essential items remain high despite the ongoing interventions of the Special Task Force (STF). On Monday, regular potatoes were being sold at ₹35 per kilogram, new potatoes at ₹50, and Bhutanese potatoes at ₹60 per kilogram. These prices have not changed significantly even after several days of STF raids, which were conducted to address price inflation in the local markets. The STF has inspected multiple markets in Siliguri, including the Regulated Market and Vidhan Market, but has not been able to lower the prices.
Shoppers have expressed concerns over the rising prices of vegetables as well. One shopper stated, “Everyone is busy filling their own pockets,” citing the continued high prices despite government efforts. Cucumbers are priced at ₹20 each, while peas are being sold for ₹150 per kilogram. These prices have remained unchanged despite the STF's market checks, and residents are skeptical that the situation will improve even after the Task Force concludes its inspections.
STF officials have acknowledged that the market prices are influenced by the supply of seasonal vegetables. “The price of potatoes will fall as new stock arrives,” an STF officer stated. However, it was also noted that the adjustment in prices may take time, and no immediate decrease in prices is expected. Officials indicated that winter vegetables are beginning to enter the market, but the effect on prices will likely be gradual. Despite these efforts, the current high prices persist across various market sectors.
