SC halts mosque survey orders, restricts lower courts in pending cases
A fatal accident occurred on Saturday night in the Patpur Lalbazar area of Bankura's Kotulpur when a dumper, involved in the construction of the Bishnupur-Tarakeswar railway track, struck and killed a motorcycle rider. The deceased has been identified as Ramzan Khan, a resident of Bhedua village in Garbeta. Khan, aged 45, was returning home after completing some business work in Jayrambati. He was riding his motorcycle along a road near the construction site when the accident took place.
The dumper, which was carrying earth as part of the railway track elevation project, reportedly lost control. According to eyewitnesses, the dumper's rear wheels ran over Khan, crushing him instantly. "The dumper was speeding, and Khan couldn't avoid the vehicle," one witness said. Local residents described the scene as chaotic, with Khan's body pinned under the wheels of the dumper for several minutes before being removed by passersby. The driver of the dumper fled the scene immediately after the incident, and authorities are currently working to track him down.
Following the accident, tensions erupted in the area, with several locals gathering at the site to protest. They blamed the dumper for the death, citing unsafe driving and the presence of construction vehicles on public roads. Residents demanded compensation for Khan's family and stricter safety measures around construction zones. "We have had enough of such accidents. The authorities need to ensure safety measures are in place, or more lives will be lost," a protestor said. The local police arrived shortly after, recovered the body, and took it to Kotulpur police station. The body has been sent to Bishnupur district hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police have also initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the accident and whether proper safety protocols were followed during the construction work.
