160 arms licenses to be cancelled over non-compliance during polls

The Ranchi Police have recommended the cancellation of licenses for 160 arms holders in Jharkhand’s Ranchi district who failed to comply with election-related directives. The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Ranchi, Varun Ranjan, has issued a final show-cause notice to these licensees, directing them to file their responses by November 22. If they fail to provide a satisfactory explanation, their licenses will be cancelled.

This action follows the district administration’s earlier directive requiring all licensed arms holders to deposit their weapons with their respective police stations or arms dealers by October 21, as part of the election security measures. Despite repeated notices, these 160 individuals neither deposited their weapons nor provided valid reasons for non-compliance.

The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) office had earlier issued clarifications and reminders, but the lack of response prompted the recommendation for cancellation. Some individuals, such as bank guards, petrol pump employees, and businessmen handling significant sums of money, were exempted from depositing their arms. These exemptions are granted by a screening committee chaired by the Deputy Commissioner.

Ranchi district has 3,500 arms licenses, and all license holders were instructed to undergo verification at their respective police stations before depositing their weapons.
