Sub-Inspector (SI) Manoranjan Mondal, who is the OC of Barabani police station, Paschim Burdwan district, was suspended for alleged negligence and unprofessional conduct. The suspension came hours after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused a section of the lower-ranking police of being involved in corruption and illegal activities.
The Chief Minister, who also holds the portfolio of Police Minister, made her remarks during a meeting at Nabanna. She alleged that certain lower-ranking police officials and members of central forces like the CISF were facilitating coal and sand smuggling in exchange for bribes. “I will not allow a section of the CISF or the police to steal by taking money,” she declared, adding that departmental inquiries would follow specific allegations.
Shortly after her statement, the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate announced disciplinary action against SI Manoranjan Mondal. A document signed by Commissioner Sunil Kumar Chowdhury indicated that the SI was suspended for failing to perform his duties diligently.
The suspension order stated that a departmental inquiry had been initiated, and the SI would receive half his basic salary during the period but retain other allowances. Mondal was also directed to deposit his official items at the Asansol police lines until further notice.
According to police sources, the crackdown is likely to extend to other officers facing similar allegations. The Chief Minister's remarks and subsequent actions have stirred significant activity in police and administrative circles, reflecting a drive to address corruption at various levels.
The Barabani police station, located in a district known for its coal and sand reserves, has frequently been under scrutiny for allegations of illegal trade. Observers believe that this suspension could set the tone for stricter measures across the state.
