According to the National Centre of Seismology (NCS), an earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan’s Badakhshan region early Friday morning. The tremor occurred at 6:35 a.m. IST, with its epicenter recorded at Latitude 36.32 N and Longitude 71.37 E at a depth of 82 kilometers.
Badakhshan, a rugged and mountainous area, is highly prone to natural disasters, including frequent earthquakes. This latest tremor adds to a series of seismic activities reported in the region. Earlier this week, the area experienced two earthquakes, measuring 4.4 and 3.9, raising concerns about the region's vulnerability to such calamities.
According to the NCS, over 10 earthquakes have been recorded in Badakhshan over the past month. The persistent seismic activity underscores the region’s geological volatility, attributed to its location near tectonic fault lines.
