Youth dies after alleged beating at South Garia drug rehab, family vandalizes centre in protest
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has decided not to request a deferral for ongoing decisions, confirming that the established timeline for these matters will be followed. During her address, she clarified that no further notifications would be issued, as the required procedures had already been initiated. She also stated that progress was being made in addressing various issues and emphasized that certain police officers were hindering these efforts.
Mamata Banerjee raised concerns regarding the involvement of a section of police officers in corrupt activities. She said, "Some officers, who do not support this government, are engaging in corrupt practices like taking bribes." She further detailed illegal activities such as sand theft, coal smuggling, and cement theft, suggesting that officers were complicit in these crimes by facilitating or enabling such practices.
The Chief Minister directed the state’s Director General of Police (DGP), Rajeev Kumar, to take immediate action to address these issues. She emphasized that her comments were directed at a specific group of officers and that not all police personnel were involved. Her criticism follows the ongoing examination of the state's law and order situation, particularly regarding the police's handling of criminal activities in the region.
In addition, Mamata announced that the state's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) would undergo a reshuffle. She stated that any complaints lodged with the department would be thoroughly cross-checked, and strict action would be taken if the complaints were substantiated. Mamata emphasized that swift and firm measures would be enforced to address any issues within the police force and ensure accountability for any illegal activities.
