A cyclonic circulation has developed over the South Andaman Sea, and weather experts have confirmed that it will likely intensify into a low-pressure area by Saturday. The system is predicted to shift into the southeastern Bay of Bengal, where it may further strengthen. By Monday, the low-pressure area could become more powerful near the southwestern Bay of Bengal, along the Sri Lankan coast and Tamil Nadu. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has been closely monitoring the system’s progress to assess its potential impact on the region.
At present, the system is not expected to directly affect West Bengal. The low-pressure area is located well south of the state, and its path suggests that Bengal will remain unaffected by heavy rainfall or significant weather changes. However, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are already feeling the effects of the system. The islands have been experiencing continuous rainfall since Thursday, and the IMD has issued warnings of heavy to very heavy showers in the coming days. These rains are expected to impact both the Nicobar and Andaman Islands, with the possibility of flooding and disruptions to daily life.
As a result of the developing low-pressure system, the IMD has also issued a warning for fishermen. The South Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea are expected to experience rough seas, with strong winds and high waves making it dangerous for maritime activities. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into these waters, and their safety is being closely monitored. The alert is expected to remain in effect throughout the weekend as the system strengthens and continues to affect the region.
In West Bengal, the weather is expected to remain relatively stable despite the nearby system. Kolkata's minimum temperature is predicted to hover between 19 and 20 degrees Celsius over the next few days, consistent with typical winter conditions. The skies are expected to remain mostly clear in the evening after some cloud cover in the afternoon. While there will be some fog in the early morning hours, it is likely to dissipate by late morning, allowing for clearer skies during the day. The overall weather in the state will remain mild with no major disruptions expected.
