Open Doors 2024: U.S. hosts 1.1 million international students, India takes lead

The number of international students at U.S. colleges and universities reached an all-time high of 1,126,690 during the 2023-2024 academic year, according to the latest Open Doors 2024 Report on International Educational Exchange. This marks a 7% increase from the previous year and underscores the U.S. as a leading destination for global higher education.

India emerged as the largest contributor to this growth, sending 331,602 students—a record-breaking 23% increase from the previous year. For the first time since 2009, India surpassed China as the top source of international students, now accounting for 29% of the total international student population in the U.S.

U.S. Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, celebrated this milestone, stating, "India’s leadership in international student enrollment reflects the deep educational ties between our nations. This achievement reinforces the U.S. as a premier destination for Indian students pursuing global opportunities."

Graduate programs remain the most popular choice for Indian students, with nearly 197,000 enrolled—a 19% year-on-year growth. Additionally, participation in Optional Practical Training (OPT) programs surged by 41%, reaching 97,556, highlighting India’s role in contributing skilled professionals to the U.S. economy. Undergraduate enrollments also saw a 13% increase, exceeding 36,000 students. However, non-degree student numbers dropped by 28%, reflecting a shift in enrollment preferences.

Sachin Jain, Country Manager for ETS India, noted, "The report underscores the steadfast preference of Indian students for the U.S. The alignment of these numbers with GRE and TOEFL test taker trends indicates robust interest in U.S. higher education and its opportunities."

The Open Doors 2024 Report, jointly published by the U.S. Department of State and the Institute of International Education, highlights the importance of educational exchanges in fostering cross-cultural collaboration. It also reflects the growing demand for global education in a competitive world.
