BJP MLA arrested after clashing with police over Kalyani dumping ground, RAF deployed

Violent protests broke out in Kalyani on Thursday after BJP legislator Ambika Roy was arrested for obstructing government work during a demonstration against the construction of a dumping ground in Ward 6. The Kalyani Municipal Corporation had initiated the construction of a boundary wall around the controversial dumping site, which local residents have long opposed. Residents argue that the dumping ground, located near residential areas, could lead to environmental pollution and health hazards.

The protests began when municipal workers started laying the foundation for the wall. Local residents, who had been protesting for months over the site’s location, intensified their demonstration. BJP MLA Ambika Roy joined the protesters, allegedly preventing municipal employees from carrying out their work. As tensions rose, police forces arrived to control the crowd. Roy was arrested for obstructing government duties and creating a disturbance, leading to further unrest among protestors and BJP supporters in the area.

The arrest of the legislator sparked violent reactions, with demonstrators throwing stones at police officers and vandalizing vehicles. According to authorities, several motorcycles and other items were damaged during the protests. In response, the police conducted a lathi charge to disperse the crowd and deployed tear gas to control the situation. Despite these efforts, the situation remained tense, and the violence continued for several hours.

To bring the situation under control, the Rapid Action Force (RAF) was deployed to Kalyani. The presence of the RAF aimed to prevent further escalation and maintain law and order. Local officials confirmed that the protests had resulted in significant disruptions in the area, but there were no immediate reports of injuries. The Kalyani Municipal Corporation has not issued an official statement regarding the incident or the status of the dumping ground project.
