As Maharashtra votes in the ongoing assembly elections, law enforcement agencies have made a significant seizure of 10,000 kilograms of silver bricks valued at ₹94.68 crore. The discovery was made by the Dhule district police during a vehicle inspection in Thalner village of Shirpur taluka.
Special Inspector General of Police, Nashik Range, Dattatreya Karale, provided details, stating, “During strict checks due to the elections, 10,000 kg of silver ingots were recovered from a container early this morning. The container was intercepted at 5 am as part of routine vehicle inspections.”
The recovered silver is reportedly linked to a financial institution, but the matter is still under investigation. Authorities are verifying the origin and purpose of the silver, and any potential connections to election-related activities are being explored.
This is not the first such incident during the election period. Earlier, Mumbai Police seized 8,500 kilograms of silver worth ₹80 lakh from another container. Both cases have now drawn the attention of the Enforcement Directorate and GST Department, which are investigating possible tax evasion and financial irregularities.
The state police have intensified vehicle inspections during the election season to prevent illegal movement of cash, precious metals, and other valuables. These efforts are part of a larger strategy to ensure free and fair elections by curbing any potential misuse of resources to influence voters.
With over 9.70 crore voters participating in Maharashtra's elections, the stakes are high, prompting a strict watch on all suspicious activities. The recent silver hauls have highlighted the challenges of maintaining transparency during such crucial events.
