SC halts mosque survey orders, restricts lower courts in pending cases
As Delhi grapples with hazardous air quality, the city’s Environment Minister Gopal Rai has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to authorize artificial rain to alleviate the worsening pollution. On Tuesday, Delhi recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 494, placing it in the ‘severe plus’ category. Several air monitoring stations even touched the maximum limit of 500 despite strict implementation of GRAP Stage IV restrictions.
Addressing the media, Rai called the situation a “medical emergency” and stressed that artificial rain is the only immediate solution to clear the toxic smog engulfing the region. “PM Modi should intervene and ensure the Centre takes prompt action. If the Union Environment Minister cannot act, he should resign,” Rai stated, criticizing Bhupender Yadav for his alleged inaction despite repeated appeals since August.
The Delhi government has implemented multiple measures, including banning BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles, halting the entry of diesel trucks and buses, and closing schools for younger children. Rai also hinted at considering a work-from-home policy and reintroducing the odd-even vehicle scheme, though he noted its effectiveness depends on clearing the existing smog layer.
Artificial rain, also known as cloud seeding, involves dispersing substances like silver iodide and dry ice into the atmosphere to stimulate rainfall. This method, previously considered by Delhi in 2023, is seen as a temporary but impactful solution to reduce air pollution by settling airborne particles. However, the Supreme Court recently advised the AAP government to seek permission from the Centre rather than pursuing the matter in court.
Delhi’s plea for artificial rain comes amid criticism of delayed action against pollution in the region. The Supreme Court has directed authorities not to relax pollution curbs even if the AQI falls below 450. Meanwhile, Rai continues to demand a comprehensive approach from the Central government to tackle the crisis effectively.
“Layers of smog are not just a local issue but a threat to North India. Immediate action is non-negotiable,” Rai emphasized, urging the Centre to convene an emergency meeting on cloud seeding and artificial rain.
