A tragic incident occurred at Chandannagar Sub-Divisional Hospital in Hooghly district on Sunday night, where 43-year-old Prakash Bine died after jumping from the roof of the hospital. Bine, a resident of Murshidabad, had been admitted to the hospital on Friday night with severe stomach pain and blood vomiting. He had been living in the Mahadanga Colony of Chandannagar for the past seven years and worked as a driver. His medical condition led to his hospitalization, where he was under observation for his symptoms.
On Sunday, around 1:30 AM, Bine exhibited sudden and severe behavioral changes. According to hospital sources, he became aggressive and grabbed a pair of scissors from the nurses' station. He started threatening both patients and hospital staff. Bine then proceeded to enter the female medicine ward, further alarming staff and patients. Afterward, he made his way to the nursing staff’s room and fled up the stairs to the roof.
Hospital staff, fearing for their safety due to his violent behavior with the scissors, were unable to approach him or intervene. Once on the roof, Bine jumped off the building in a sudden, unanticipated act. Emergency medical staff immediately rushed to the scene and managed to rescue him, bringing him back into the hospital's emergency department. Despite intensive efforts to revive him, he was declared dead at approximately 3:00 AM after being transferred to the operating theatre for further treatment.
According to hospital authorities, Bine had a known history of chronic alcoholism. Hospital Superintendent Shantu Ghosh confirmed that Bine’s condition had been complicated by alcohol withdrawal symptoms, which are known to cause aggressive and erratic behavior in some patients. While Bine had been receiving treatment for his symptoms, his actions on Sunday night were uncharacteristic of his prior behavior during the hospitalization.
Following the incident, Bine’s family members were notified of his death late Sunday night. His wife, Mithu Bine, along with other family members, arrived at the hospital on Monday morning to identify the body. Mithu Bine raised concerns about the hospital’s security protocols, questioning how her husband was able to threaten staff and ultimately jump from the roof. Local health officials, including the Chief Health Officer of Hooghly district, Mriganka Mouli Kar, visited the hospital on Monday to inspect the site and evaluate the security measures in place at the facility.
Authorities have assured that an internal investigation is underway to determine how Bine was able to access the scissors and reach the roof despite the hospital's security measures. Meanwhile, hospital staff and medical personnel have been cooperating with the investigation to provide a detailed account of the events leading up to Bine’s tragic death.
