Youth dies after alleged beating at South Garia drug rehab, family vandalizes centre in protest
A violent murder occurred on Saturday night in Kalaikunda, West Midnapore, when 47-year-old businessman Umashankar Mahato was killed during the ongoing road festival at Padaridha Bazaar. Mahato, a land businessman and president of the local Puja Committee, was at his workplace when the attack took place. Three assailants armed with sharp weapons attacked Mahato, slashing his throat before fleeing the scene.
The incident occurred amid the festivities, causing widespread panic in the area. Upon receiving a distress call, the police arrived at the location and rushed Mahato to Kharagpur Sub-Divisional Hospital. Despite attempts to save him, doctors declared Mahato dead on arrival due to the severity of his injuries.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the murder may be linked to a long-running land dispute. Mahato had been involved in property dealings in the area, and investigators are focusing on this conflict as a potential motive for the attack. The police have initiated a manhunt for the suspects, who are reportedly absconding since the incident.
According to local sources, Mahato had been in a prolonged dispute with family members, including Raju Mahato and Mangal Mahato, over land matters. Police have filed a complaint against the individuals suspected to be involved in the crime. Investigations are ongoing, with the police questioning locals and the victim's family members. A search operation has been launched to locate and arrest the suspects.
