SC halts mosque survey orders, restricts lower courts in pending cases
On Sunday morning, a violent robbery attempt occurred at a gold shop in Mukundpur, Kolkata, when two criminals posed as customers and tried to steal valuables. The incident took place around 11:30 AM when the suspects, identified later as Dipankar Pal and Sagar, entered the shop and attempted to loot the gold. Shop owner Sanjay Sarkar noticed their intentions and tried to resist. One of the attackers, wielding a sharp weapon, slashed Sarkar’s throat, causing severe injuries. Despite the attack, Sarkar managed to hold on to one of the assailants while screaming for help, after which the criminals fled the scene.
Sarkar was immediately taken to a nearby hospital in a critical condition. Doctors reported that he sustained deep lacerations to his neck but was fortunate to survive the assault. Authorities confirmed that he remains in critical care but stable. The police response was swift, and they apprehended the two suspects within hours of the attack. Both suspects were arrested by the East Jadavpur police and charged with attempted robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. They were taken into custody and are undergoing interrogation to uncover further details about the crime.
The police are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the full extent of the operation and whether other criminals were involved. Initial investigations suggest that the robbery attempt could be part of a larger pattern of thefts targeting gold shops in the area. Just days earlier, similar heists were reported in Purulia and Ranaghat, where criminal gangs with suspected connections to Bihar were believed to be involved. Authorities are also reviewing CCTV footage from the Mukundpur shop and nearby areas to identify any additional suspects or witnesses.
In response to the increasing number of robbery attempts, Kolkata police have intensified patrols in commercial areas, especially those with high foot traffic like gold markets. The police have also increased security checks at prominent shopping hubs and are working to implement additional measures such as surveillance upgrades in the region. Local authorities are focusing on breaking any criminal networks operating in Kolkata and are investigating the possibility that the suspects may be part of a larger interstate criminal syndicate involved in similar crimes across West Bengal.
