Kolkata is moving forward with plans to install seismic beams in the historic New market area to mitigate potential earthquake damage. The SS Hogg Market, a heritage structure built in 1874 and managed by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) since 1875, will be the first municipal market in the city to undergo such reinforcement. Located in a region identified as earthquake-prone, the market is an important commercial hub and has been the focus of city authorities aiming to protect it from seismic damage.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the installation of seismic beams has been finalized with an estimated budget of Rs 26 crore. The seismic beams will be installed to strengthen the existing structural framework of the market, ensuring it can withstand the forces of an earthquake. These beams are specifically designed to absorb and redistribute seismic energy, reducing the risk of significant damage to the building and surrounding infrastructure. The project will be carried out in phases, with initial focus on assessing the site and preparing the area for installation.
The installation plan follows a site visit by the Divisional Mayor Council, accompanied by engineers from various city departments, including the Market Department. The purpose of this visit was to conduct an in-depth assessment of the building’s current condition, review the logistics of the installation process, and ensure that the necessary safety and preparatory measures are in place. The council and engineers have been working closely on this project to ensure the technology is integrated seamlessly with the existing structure.
Kolkata, being situated in a seismically active zone, has long faced concerns about the vulnerability of its heritage buildings to earthquakes. The seismic beam installation at New market is part of a broader initiative by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation to modernize and strengthen key commercial and heritage sites in the city. Other similar initiatives are expected to follow as part of the city’s commitment to disaster prevention and urban resilience. This move comes amid increasing awareness of the potential seismic risks in the region, and efforts are underway to implement similar technologies in other vulnerable areas across Kolkata.
