Youth dies after alleged beating at South Garia drug rehab, family vandalizes centre in protest
In a sharp remark at a rally on Saturday, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was suffering from memory loss, drawing a comparison to U.S. President Joe Biden, who often makes verbal missteps. Gandhi, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, took to the stage in Amravati, Maharashtra, and made the controversial comment while addressing the crowd.
The Congress leader recalled an incident where Biden, 81, mistakenly introduced Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Russian President Vladimir Putin. He humorously remarked, “My sister told me that she heard Modi Ji's speech. And in that speech, whatever we say, Modi Ji is saying the same thing these days. I don't know, maybe he has lost his memory."
Gandhi went on to compare Modi’s speech patterns to Biden’s, adding, "The former President of America used to forget and had to be reminded from behind. Similarly, our Prime Minister is losing his memory.” The comment was met with a mix of applause and jeers from the crowd, highlighting the ongoing tension between the ruling BJP and opposition parties.
Gandhi also pointed out contradictions in Modi’s recent speeches, where he claimed that the Congress was attacking the Constitution. "For the past one year, I have been saying that the BJP has been attacking the Constitution in my speeches, but PM Modi is now saying that Congress is attacking the Constitution," Gandhi said, suggesting that Modi was reversing his previous statements.
He also criticized Modi for misrepresenting his position on reservation policies. Gandhi reiterated his previous statement in the Lok Sabha, saying that the Congress and the INDIA bloc would abolish the 50% reservation cap, and added that Modi had falsely claimed Gandhi was against reservation.
In a final push to the rally, Gandhi advocated for a nationwide caste census, stressing the need for accurate data on Dalits, Adivasis, and OBCs. "I told Modi Ji to do a caste census. The country should know how many Dalits, Adivasis and OBCs are there," he said, predicting that Modi would later deny his stance on the issue.
As the Maharashtra Assembly elections draw closer, Gandhi’s comments seem designed to capitalize on his party's strong performance in previous elections. The Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is gearing up to challenge the ruling Mahayuti alliance, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde), and NCP (Ajit Pawar).
The Maharashtra Assembly elections are scheduled for November 20, with vote counting on November 23.
