Kolkata metro to be extended till Hooghly's Chuchura? Here's what Railway minister says
The body of Satyajit Bandopadhyay, the Vice Chairman of North Barrackpore Municipality, was discovered on Saturday morning at his residence in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Bandopadhyay had been missing for the past two days, during which his family had been searching for him. On Friday night, he returned home but left again after a brief stay, leaving his mobile phone behind. His family found him early Saturday morning in the attic of the house, hanging by a noose.
The police from Noapara Police Station were alerted and quickly arrived at the scene. Authorities have confirmed that Bandopadhyay’s body was found in a hanging position, but no suicide note was recovered. The police are currently investigating all possible angles, including the possibility of suicide, but have not ruled out other causes. The body has been sent for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Police have also gathered statements from Bandopadhyay’s family, but further investigation is ongoing.
This incident follows a troubling sequence of violent events in the state. Just days before Bandopadhyay's death, TMC leader Ashok Sahu was killed in Bhatpara. Sahu, a young leader of the Trinamool Congress, was reportedly sitting at a tea stall during the by-elections when he was shot. The shooting occurred in broad daylight, sparking fear and concern within the local community. The police are investigating the motive behind this murder and have intensified efforts to find those responsible.
Additionally, on Friday evening, there was an attempted attack on Sushanta Ghosh, a TMC councillor from Kolkata. Ghosh was targeted by an assailant who tried to shoot him while he was walking near his home in the Kasba area. The gun, however, malfunctioned, and Ghosh was unharmed. Police have not disclosed further details on the attacker’s identity but are investigating whether this incident is linked to the recent rise in political violence targeting TMC members.
