TMC councillor Sushanta Ghosh of Ward 108 in Kasba narrowly escaped an armed attack outside his residence on Friday evening. CCTV footage showed two men arriving on a motorbike, with one attempting to shoot Ghosh as he sat outside with two others. The attack was foiled when the firearm malfunctioned, preventing any shots from being fired.
As the assailants tried to flee, one escaped on the motorbike, while the other was apprehended by a bystander. The detained attacker, identified as a resident of Bihar, is being interrogated by the police. Preliminary investigations suggest the attack was preplanned and targeted. Police are actively tracing the fugitive and investigating any potential connections or motives behind the attack.
Sushanta Ghosh expressed serious concerns over public safety and the rising criminal activities in Kasba. He said, “If elected representatives can be attacked, where is the safety for the common people?” While Ghosh refrained from naming anyone, he alluded to the deteriorating political climate in the area.
Mayor Firhad Hakim condemned the incident and called for stronger measures to prevent such attacks. He emphasized that illegal firearms must be seized to curb the increasing use of weapons. Police have deployed additional forces in the area to ensure law and order while efforts to apprehend the second attacker and uncover further details continue. Trinamool Congress leaders have assured that the investigation will be expedited to bring those responsible to justice.
