In a significant tribute to tribal freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda, Delhi's Sarai Kale Khan Chowk has been officially renamed as Birsa Munda Chowk. Union Minister of Urban Development Manohar Lal Khattar made the announcement on Friday, coinciding with the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of the legendary tribal leader from Jharkhand. This move is also part of the observance of Janjatiya Gaurav Divas, which honors the contributions of India’s tribal communities.
At the ceremony, Khattar remarked, "Today, I am announcing that the major chowk outside the ISBT bus stand will be known as Bhagwan Birsa Munda Chowk. His statue and the renamed chowk will inspire not only Delhi's citizens but also visitors to the International Bus Terminal." The renaming aims to honor Munda's immense contributions to India's freedom struggle, particularly his leadership in the tribal revolt against British colonial rule.
The ceremony also saw the unveiling of a statue of Bhagwan Birsa Munda by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accompanied by Khattar and Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. Munda's legacy as a leader of the tribal freedom struggle, especially his role in the "Ulgulan" (rebellion) against British policies, was highlighted. His efforts in defending tribal land rights and fighting against British-imposed poverty and bonded labor have earned him immense respect.
Munda, known affectionately as 'Dharti Aba' or 'Father of the Earth,' was a visionary who founded Birsait, a faith that blended animism and indigenous beliefs. Despite his early death at the age of 25, his influence continues to resonate in India’s tribal communities. The Central Government declared November 15, his birth anniversary, as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas in 2021 to recognize the significance of tribal communities across the nation.
