Mamata calls urgent meeting at Nabanna tomorrow, key administrative officials to attend
A first-year student at Kanthi Ayurveda College and Hospital in West Bengal has been critically injured after falling from the third floor of an under-construction hostel building. The incident occurred around 10:30 PM on Sunday night, following the completion of construction work for the day. All workers had left the site, and no students were allowed access to the building after hours. The student, whose identity has not been disclosed, was found in a bloodied state by fellow students outside the hostel building. They reported hearing a loud noise before discovering her. Immediate help was provided, and she was rushed to Kanthi Sub-Divisional Hospital for initial treatment, before being transferred to a Kolkata hospital due to the severity of her injuries.
The under-construction hostel building is a three-story structure, with access restricted to students. The building had been under construction for some time, and all upper floors were locked. Despite this, the student reportedly accessed the upper floors, which were meant to be off-limits. The college administration has yet to clarify how the student reached the restricted area. Some sources indicate that the fall occurred after the workday ended and the site was vacated by construction workers. There is currently no confirmed information on whether the incident was accidental or a result of other factors.
Sukumar Maity, the secretary of Kanthi Ayurveda College, arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported. He personally transported the student to the hospital in his vehicle. He mentioned that, according to her friends, the student had been struggling with mental distress. However, Maity did not provide further details on the student’s condition or the specific reasons for her distress. The college has not issued a formal statement regarding the fall or how the student was able to access the building during restricted hours.
Local students and staff have expressed concerns about safety protocols on campus. Some students raised issues about the lack of proper lighting around the construction site, which could have contributed to the fall. Additionally, there were no security guards present in the area at the time of the incident. Some students also reported seeing the injured student talking on her phone before the fall, though it is unclear whether this is connected to the incident. The local police are conducting an investigation, gathering witness statements, and reviewing security footage to determine the cause of the fall and whether any safety protocols were violated.
