Thief trapped by housewife in Behala, arrested by police after failed robbery attempt
Justice Sanjiv Khanna, known for his role in several landmark Supreme Court rulings, was sworn in as India’s 51st Chief Justice on Monday. The oath ceremony took place at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath. Justice Khanna succeeds Justice DY Chandrachud, who ended his term on Friday with a grand farewell from the judicial community.
The Centre confirmed Khanna’s appointment on October 24 after a recommendation from outgoing Chief Justice Chandrachud on October 16. At 64, Justice Khanna’s tenure as CJI will last until May 13, 2025.
During his career, Justice Khanna has contributed significantly to Indian jurisprudence, ruling on cases such as the electoral bonds scheme’s invalidation, upholding the abrogation of Article 370, and supporting the use of electronic voting machines.
Justice Khanna's bench also made headlines by granting Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal interim bail for campaign purposes during the Lok Sabha elections. His influence continues as he takes on the role of CJI, bringing his expertise and experience to the helm of India’s judiciary.
