Tension has erupted at RG Kar Medical College following the suicide attempt of a young nursing student in the college hostel. This incident
surfaced only three months after Bengal was shaken by the alleged rape and murder of a female doctor at the same college. The aftermath of that tragic event continues to impact the campus, with ongoing unrest among students and faculty alike. The nursing student reportedly attempted suicide in her hostel room on Saturday night, sustaining injuries to his hand. While the circumstances leading to the incident remain unclear, there are indications that recent internal disputes within the hostel may have contributed. Tala police station has been alerted, and a preliminary investigation is underway to determine the cause and context of the student's actions. The student is currently receiving treatment at the trauma care center of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The institution has faced heightened scrutiny since the tragic incident on August 9, when the body of a female medical student was discovered in the seminar hall on the fourth floor of the emergency department. The incident was initially labeled a rape and murder, sparking widespread protests from junior doctors across the state.
They called for justice and raised concerns about campus safety, prompting support from the public and senior medical staff. The protestors organized a series of strikes, including a hunger strike, demanding action and security improvements within medical colleges. Although the government held multiple meetings with the protestors, tensions at RG Kar Medical College remain high, as reflected in recent events.
