Youth dies after alleged beating at South Garia drug rehab, family vandalizes centre in protest
Acting on specific intelligence, a team from the Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police detained a man, identified as Md. Israil Khan, on Baithak Khana Road in Kolkata. The 53-year-old, originally from Ketariwar village in Jharkhand’s Chatra district, was found carrying a substantial cache of firearms and ammunition.
Upon detaining and searching Khan, who also has a residence at Patwar Bagan Lane in Kolkata's Rajabazar area, the STF discovered a range of weapons. These included three single-shot firearms and two semi-automatic pistols, each of 7 mm caliber. Additionally, a large supply of ammunition was seized, comprising 50 rounds of 8 mm live cartridges and 40 rounds of 7.65 mm live cartridges.
The STF has registered a case at their police station under relevant sections concerning illegal possession and transport of arms. This operation is part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal arms trafficking in Kolkata and surrounding areas, following recent intelligence inputs about the movement of illegal firearms across state borders.
Khan, currently in STF custody, will be produced in court tomorrow for further proceedings. Officials expect further questioning to shed light on his source of weapons and possible connections with wider arms smuggling networks. The seized arms and ammunition have been sent for forensic examination to determine their origins and any past usage.
