An elderly woman, Sabita Rai (73), tragically lost her life on Thursday morning after reportedly falling from her apartment balcony in Baranagar. This incident follows an alleged history of abuse by her son, who reportedly assaulted her again on Wednesday night.
According to police sources, Sabita had been living in a four-story flat on Nabin Chandra Das Road, Ward 16 of the Baranagar Municipal Corporation, with her son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter. Neighbors recounted that Sabita’s son, Raju, who works at a local grill factory, would often return home intoxicated and quarrel with his mother, primarily over property-related matters. His abusive behavior had led Sabita to file a complaint with the police a year ago, resulting in Raju’s brief arrest before he was released. However, the disputes allegedly continued.
On Wednesday night, Raju reportedly returned home intoxicated and began arguing with his mother. Witnesses claim that after a heated confrontation around 11:30 p.m., Sabita fell from the open balcony of her flat. In critical condition, she was rushed first to Baranagar State General Hospital and later transferred to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Authorities initially suspect that Sabita may have taken her own life, but they are not ruling out foul play and are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding her death. Raju is currently missing, and the Baranagar police have launched a search operation.
