Kolkata Municipal Corporation Mayor Firhad Hakim is embroiled in controversy following remarks he made about BJP leader Rekha Patra during an election campaign rally for the upcoming by-elections in Haroa. Hakim used the term "hero mal" while addressing a crowd and referring to Patra, which quickly became a point of contention. The comment, perceived by many as derogatory, escalated tensions between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition BJP, with critics alleging that the Mayor had insulted not only Patra but also women in general.
The controversy led to the filing of a formal complaint with the Bidhannagar Commissionerate, where a detailed allegation was made regarding the derogatory nature of the term used by Hakim. In addition, the National Commission for Women (NCW) took immediate notice of the incident and issued a statement expressing concern over the comment. The NCW has requested an explanation from Hakim regarding his remarks and is reviewing the matter to assess whether it constitutes an offense under Indian laws related to disrespect towards women.
In an attempt to diffuse the situation, Firhad Hakim clarified his statement, claiming that the phrase "hero mal" was not intended to disrespect Patra as an individual or as a woman. Hakim stated that the term was meant as a political jibe aimed at the BJP, not at Patra personally. He explained, "I see women as mothers and have the utmost respect for them. The term 'hero mal' was meant for the BJP, not Rekha Patra." He expressed regret if his words had been misconstrued and apologized to anyone who felt offended by the comment. Additionally, Hakim stressed that he never intended to insult women, as they hold an important place in his life and society.
The incident has further intensified the political rivalry between TMC and BJP, especially ahead of the by-elections. Other TMC leaders have supported Hakim’s clarification. TMC MLA Madan Mitra defended the Mayor, asserting that calling the BJP "mal" was not an insult and did not reflect any disrespect towards women. He echoed Hakim’s position, stating that the term was a political criticism and should not be taken as a personal attack. Following the incident, the TMC leadership reiterated its stance on respecting women, noting that Firhad Hakim has always been an advocate for women’s rights. Hakim himself pointed to his support for women’s issues, citing his participation in Durga Puja and Kali Puja celebrations, which he emphasized as a sign of his deep respect for Bengali women.
