SC halts mosque survey orders, restricts lower courts in pending cases
A theft attempt at Burdwan Medical College was thwarted on Wednesday afternoon, leading to the arrest of two women. The incident occurred in a warehouse within the college campus that is managed by the Public Works Department (PWD). The warehouse, which stores various items including electrical equipment, was targeted by a group of six women. According to security personnel, the women entered the warehouse with the intention of stealing goods. One of the security guards, who had briefly stepped away from his post, entered the warehouse and saw six women attempting to flee.
After noticing the suspicious activity, the guard immediately contacted other security staff, leading to a rapid response. Two women, identified as Manjula Das and Bishakha Das, were detained at the scene. They were found in possession of two bags containing several electric fans, which were being stored in the warehouse for repair. Local sources confirmed that the fans, along with other equipment, were part of the college’s maintenance inventory. The rest of the women involved in the theft attempt managed to escape before law enforcement arrived at the scene.
Purnendu Shekhar Das, the head of the security company responsible for safeguarding the campus, confirmed the incident. He stated that four of the women managed to flee the scene, but the security team was able to apprehend two women. Das further explained that the security staff acted swiftly to secure the area and informed local authorities, who arrived shortly thereafter. The stolen electric fans were returned to the warehouse, and an investigation was launched into the theft attempt.
Sauradeep Konar, an Electrical Engineer at PWD, addressed concerns about the security measures at the college, particularly in light of the incident. Konar noted that the college campus is large, with multiple areas under constant use, making it challenging to monitor all sections effectively. He called for improved security protocols to ensure better protection of the college's facilities. Dr. Gouranga Pramanik, a senior medical officer at Burdwan Medical College, also echoed the need for stronger security, especially with the increasing number of incidents involving unauthorized access to restricted areas.
Local police were notified of the theft attempt and arrived to take the two women into custody. An official police report was filed, and the arrested women were transferred to the police station for further questioning. Investigators are focusing on the other four women who escaped, and efforts are underway to track them down. The police are also looking into whether this incident is part of a larger pattern of thefts targeting the college or similar institutions.
