An FIR has been registered against BJP leader and actor Mithun Chakraborty at Bowbazar police station following alleged controversial remarks he made during Union Home Minister Amit Shah's workshop meeting in Kolkata. According to sources, the complainant filed the FIR anonymously, citing security concerns.
On October 27, the BJP held a workshop in Bowbazar where Mithun Chakraborty addressed attendees, allegedly responding to comments made by Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir. Kabir had previously remarked that in Bharatpur, where there is a 70 percent Muslim and 30 percent Hindu demographic, he could eliminate BJP supporters within two hours if necessary, emphasizing his dominance in the region. Kabir’s comments, seen by some as inciting communal tensions, drew criticism from BJP leaders, with Mithun Chakraborty’s subsequent remarks at the Bowbazar event escalating the tension further.
In his response, Mithun criticized Kabir’s language, stating, “One of our leaders here said, 70 percent Muslims, 30 percent Hindus, will be cut and floated in Bhagirathi… no one forbade it. I am not the Chief Minister, but I will tell you that one day will come when I will throw you not in Bhagirathi, because Bhagirathi is our mother, but in your own land.” Mithun’s comments were perceived by some as provocative, prompting the complainant to lodge the FIR.
The remarks have sparked a significant backlash, with police now investigating whether Mithun’s words were inflammatory or intended to incite public unrest. The controversy underscores the charged political climate in Bengal, as BJP and Trinamool leaders continue to exchange barbed comments. Bowbazar police have confirmed the registration of the FIR and noted that they are investigating the content of Chakraborty’s speech as well as the legality of his statements under relevant sections of the law.
Political experts have voiced concern about the escalation of communal rhetoric in Bengal's politics. As leaders from both parties trade accusations, calls for restraint have been raised by various social groups to maintain peace.
