Amber Lakra has been appointed as the new Superintendent of Police (SP) for Deoghar, following the directive issued by the Election Commission of India for the removal of Ajit Peter Dungdung from the post. The Election Commission communicated this directive on October 29, 2024, as part of its mandate to ensure the proper enforcement of electoral laws and maintain the integrity of the electoral process. Lakra, who has been with the Jharkhand police for several years, previously held the position of Commandant at the Jharkhand Armed Police (JAP)-3 in Govindpur, Dhanbad, where she developed significant experience in managing law enforcement operations.
The delay in executing the Election Commission's directive stemmed from the Home, Jail, and Disaster Management Department of the Jharkhand government, which failed to submit a list of candidates for the SP position within the mandated three-day period following the Commission's order. As a result, Dungdung continued in his role as Deoghar SP, prompting the Election Commission to issue a reminder on November 3, urging the state to expedite the selection and appointment process. The Commission highlighted the importance of timely compliance to ensure a transparent and fair electoral environment.
After receiving the Election Commission's reminder, the state government submitted a panel of candidates on November 4, 2024. The panel included Amber Lakra, Sarojini Lakra, and Manish Toppo. Following a thorough review of the candidates by the Election Commission, Amber Lakra was confirmed as the new SP for Deoghar. An official notification was issued on November 5, 2024, formalizing her appointment.
