RG Kar case: Sanjay Roy presented in Sealdah Court as charges are set to be framed

In a critical development in the RG Kar rape and murder case, the main accused, a civic volunteer, was presented at Sealdah court on Monday afternoon. The accused was transported under heavy security from the Presidency Correctional Facility, where they have been held since their arrest. A closed-door hearing was expected to commence by 2 PM, during which the court was anticipated to discuss the framing of charges against the accused. This court appearance comes 87 days after the tragic discovery of the female doctor's body.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to address various matters related to the RG Kar case on Tuesday. Additionally, two separate cases linked to this investigation are being heard in different courts. One involves allegations of financial corruption that are currently being examined in the CBI special court located in Alipore. Concurrently, the Sealdah court is preparing to begin the process of framing charges against the civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, in connection with the rape and murder of the doctor.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) submitted the initial charge sheet for this case on the 7th of last month. This document, which is approximately 200 pages long, incorporates testimonies from around 200 witnesses. The charge sheet specifically identifies the civic volunteer as the main suspect in the crime and outlines the details of the investigation conducted over the past 55 days. Additionally, it addresses claims of evidence tampering, which have emerged as a point of contention among the public and legal experts.

The case has sparked considerable public interest and outcry, especially from medical professionals and various advocacy groups. Protests have erupted, with demonstrators demanding justice for the victim and expressing dissatisfaction with the investigative process. Community leaders, including the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, and MLA Tapas Ray, have visited the victim’s family to offer their support and encourage the pursuit of justice.
