A housewife was reportedly assaulted during the Kali Puja celebrations in Santipur, Nadia, when she was allegedly splashed with alcohol from a procession. The incident occurred as three processions were making their way from the Santipur railway station to Kashyappada. Eyewitnesses reported that alcohol was thrown from one of the processions, which led to an altercation involving the victim and her husband.
According to local sources, after the housewife was splashed with alcohol, she protested the action, expressing her displeasure at the disrespectful behavior. It is alleged that in response to her protest, an individual from the procession poured alcohol from his mouth onto her. The situation escalated when her husband intervened to defend her, resulting in both the husband and wife being physically attacked by a group of youths present at the scene. Reports indicate that the attackers used a bottle to strike the couple and a friend who was accompanying them.
Following the incident, emergency services were alerted, and the victim was transported to Santipur State General Hospital for medical attention. Hospital staff have not released information regarding her condition, but it is confirmed that she received treatment for her injuries. A written complaint was lodged at the Santipur police station by the victim’s husband, detailing the sequence of events and naming the individuals believed to be involved in the attack.
As of now, no arrests have been reported in connection with this case, leading to concerns among the local community about the response from law enforcement. In the aftermath, local police have initiated an investigation, actively gathering statements from eyewitnesses and residents in the area. Authorities are also reviewing footage from surveillance cameras along the procession route to identify those involved.
