Thailand announces e-visa for Indians from Jan 1, 60-day exemption to continue
As Bhai Dooj is being celebrated, Kolkata's vegetable market continues to grapple with significant price surges that have raised concerns among consumers preparing for the festive season. Recent market reports indicate that essential vegetables have experienced steep increases due to ongoing supply shortages linked to the recent harvesting of ripe paddy.Currently, tomatoes are being sold at ₹100 per kilogram, while green chilies have soared to ₹200 per kilogram. Eggplants are also feeling the impact, now priced at ₹150 per kilogram.
The current situation has led many shoppers to adjust their purchasing habits as they prepare festive meals. Buyers have expressed concerns over the rising costs, prompting some to purchase smaller quantities of vegetables to manage their budgets effectively. A common sentiment among shoppers is the need to balance traditional meal preparations with the reality of increased expenses during this festive period.
Market vendors attribute these price hikes to a combination of low supply and high demand. The decrease in the availability of vegetables has created a challenging environment for both sellers and consumers. Many vendors are predicting that it may take time for the market to stabilize, suggesting that elevated prices could persist even after the celebrations conclude. In addition to tomatoes and green chilies, other vegetables are also witnessing price increases. Pointed gourds are currently priced at ₹60 per kilogram, cucumbers at ₹70 per kilogram, and carrots at ₹70 per kilogram as well.
