SC halts mosque survey orders, restricts lower courts in pending cases
On the morning of Kali Puja, the body of Abhijit Bandopadhyay was found in his fifth-floor attic room in Kolkata's Jorabagan area, leading to an immediate investigation by local law enforcement. Bandopadhyay, whose death has raised concerns in the community, was discovered with multiple injuries, prompting police to suspect that he was the victim of a robbery that turned deadly.
Investigators reported that Bandopadhyay was missing valuable items, including a gold chain from his neck and a gold ring from his hand. The crime scene showed clear signs of disturbance, with the room ransacked and additional gold jewelry unaccounted for, as noted by family members. The police believe that a confrontation likely occurred during the burglary, resulting in Bandopadhyay's death.
An autopsy revealed that Bandopadhyay sustained 11 injuries, primarily to the head and upper body, which were consistent with blunt force trauma. Authorities are currently working to determine the specific type of weapon used in the attack. The severity and location of the injuries suggest a violent encounter occurred prior to his death.
Police investigations have indicated that the assailant may have had prior knowledge of the residence's layout. Initial findings suggest that the perpetrator may have accessed the attic through a back door leading to the roof. This detail raises the possibility that the attacker was familiar with the home, which is being explored further in the ongoing investigation.
In addition to gathering evidence from the crime scene, law enforcement officials are reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area. Local residents reported seeing Bandopadhyay returning home around 10:30 PM on Wednesday night, shortly before the discovery of his body the following morning. Police are urging community members to remain vigilant and report any unusual activities, as they work to identify suspects and enhance safety in the neighborhood.
