Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has officially retained Virat Kohli for the IPL 2025 season, making him the highest-paid Indian player in the league's history with a retention fee of Rs.21 crores. This move ensures that Kohli will continue his remarkable association with RCB for an 18th consecutive season, solidifying his status as a key player in the franchise's ambitions.
Kohli expressed his excitement about the retention through a heartfelt message to fans and the team. “I’m super excited to continue with RCB for the next three years. The goal is to win the IPL title at least once during this cycle,” he stated. With an impressive record as the leading run-scorer in IPL history, Kohli has amassed 8,004 runs at an average of 38.16, including eight centuries in 252 matches. His performance last season saw him claim the Orange Cap with 741 runs in 15 matches, showcasing his enduring form and importance to the team.
In addition to Kohli, RCB has retained two other players: Rajat Patidar for Rs.11 crores and Yash Dayal for Rs.5 crores. With Rs.83 crores remaining in their budget, RCB is well-positioned to make further strategic acquisitions. The franchise also retains the option to use its Right to Match (RTM) cards, allowing them to reclaim up to three capped players from their previous squad, which could significantly bolster their lineup ahead of the upcoming season.
Historically, RCB has reached the IPL finals three times—in 2009, 2011, and 2016—but has yet to secure the elusive championship title. The franchise has shown improvement in recent seasons, making it to the playoffs in four of the last five tournaments. Kohli’s retention reflects RCB's confidence in his leadership and ability to guide the team towards its first title.
Kohli acknowledged the significance of his long-term commitment to RCB, stating, “It would be an honor to play for a team for 20 years. That’s going to be a big day for me.” His tenure with the franchise has fostered a special bond with the team and its fans, and Kohli's determination to deliver a championship adds an extra layer of motivation for the upcoming seasons. As RCB gears up for IPL 2025, the focus remains on building a competitive team around Kohli, aiming to transform their past near-misses into a championship victory.
