Youth dies after alleged beating at South Garia drug rehab, family vandalizes centre in protest
Ranchi police executed a major raid at GD Goenka School, uncovering ₹1.14 crore in cash and several bottles of illegal foreign liquor. The operation was launched following a tip-off regarding potential electoral misconduct linked to the school. A police team comprising approximately 100 personnel gained entry to the premises, which was closed for the Deepavali holiday. They conducted an extensive search of 25 classrooms and other areas within the school, ultimately locating the cash concealed in a briefcase in the locked office of the Deputy Principal.
Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police Chandan Kumar Sinha confirmed that the recovered cash was allegedly intended for use in influencing the upcoming Assembly elections. Authorities have expressed concerns about the implications of this discovery, prompting them to initiate a formal investigation into the source of the funds and the intended beneficiaries. The cash seizure is part of a larger crackdown on illegal financial activities associated with the electoral process in Jharkhand, especially in light of the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct.
In addition to the cash and liquor, police also discovered two suspicious mobile phones at the scene, which are being examined as part of the investigation. To ensure the accuracy of the cash count, a specialized team from the State Bank of India (SBI) was called in, equipped with note-counting machines to facilitate the verification process. Furthermore, the Income Tax Department was notified and joined the investigation to assess any potential violations of tax laws or illegal financial practices.
The raid underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement in Jharkhand to combat illegal cash movements and uphold electoral integrity. Since the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct, authorities have reported seizing over ₹121.14 crore in illegal goods and cash throughout the state. As part of the investigation, police are questioning the school management, including owner Madan Singh, who has been detained for further interrogation regarding any connections to local political figures and the circumstances surrounding the significant cash recovery.
