North Kolkata man found dead in blood-soaked room; Police suspect murder by blunt force trauma

A 57-year-old man, Abhijit Banerjee, was found dead in his rooftop room on Sen Lane in North Kolkata, triggering a police investigation into a suspected murder. The gruesome discovery was made on Thursday morning when Banerjee's driver, Papai, arrived to collect keys for a rental car he had booked that day. According to local sources, Banerjee, who lived alone on the fifth floor, had been seen by neighbors returning home with dinner around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday night.

When Papai arrived at Banerjee's residence, he found the rooftop door locked from the inside and received no response after repeated knocking. Concerned for Banerjee's well-being, Papai notified neighbors. One of them, Pramod Gupta, accessed the rooftop entrance, only to discover Banerjee lying face down in a pool of blood. Gupta immediately alerted the authorities, prompting police from the Jorabagan station and homicide detectives from Lalbazar to respond to the scene.

Upon arrival, officers noted that Banerjee's upper body showed signs of significant trauma, with blood evident on the floor and walls. Preliminary investigations suggest that he may have been struck on the head with a blunt object, although no murder weapon has been identified yet. Police are treating this case as a homicide and have secured the area for forensic analysis. A dog squad has also been deployed to help search for potential clues, and investigators are canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses.

Neighbors described Banerjee as a quiet individual who occasionally raised and sold pigeons. Family members indicated that while he was still officially married, he had been living apart from his wife for several years. His sister and her family reside in the same building but reported no unusual disturbances during the night of the incident. Police are currently interviewing Banerjee's family, the driver, and neighbors to compile more information. Additionally, authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity to identify any suspicious activities or individuals around the time of the murder
