Eight arrested in Kalyani gang rape case; four accused sent to 14-day Judicial custody

In Kalyani, police have arrested eight individuals in connection with the gang rape of a woman, highlighting ongoing concerns about women's safety in the region. The incident occurred early Wednesday morning when the victim, a housewife in her thirties, was on her way to catch a train with her husband.

Reports indicate that the couple was approached by the accused as they were walking, after which the victim was forcibly dragged to a secluded area under a bridge, where the assault took place.  Following the incident, the woman immediately filed a formal complaint at the Kalyani police station, providing detailed accounts of the attack. The investigation commenced promptly, leading to the initial arrest of four suspects on the same day.

These individuals were presented in Kalyani Sub-Divisional Court, where they were remanded to 14 days of judicial custody as police sought to gather more evidence. During the course of interrogation, authorities were able to identify and apprehend four additional suspects, thereby increasing the total number of arrests to eight.  The arrested individuals are facing serious charges, including gang rape, abduction, and criminal conspiracy.

Police have committed to a thorough investigation, employing various forensic methods to gather evidence from the crime scene, including DNA analysis and fingerprinting. Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas to identify any additional suspects or accomplices. The police have emphasized the importance of a comprehensive approach, urging the community to assist in providing information that could lead to further arrests or insights into the case.
