Over 5,000 personnel deployed in Kolkata for Diwali and Kali Puja

Kolkata Police is ramping up security in the city for Diwali and Kali Puja celebrations to ensure a safe and peaceful festive environment. Starting Wednesday night, over five thousand police personnel, including senior officers of DC rank, will be deployed across key locations to keep the peace and protect the public, especially women, as nighttime celebrations and gatherings increase.

According to police sources, the heightened security plan includes setting up approximately five hundred police pickets throughout Kolkata, particularly around areas where large crowds are anticipated. Local police stations have also been instructed to strengthen security measures to complement citywide efforts. These measures aim to prevent untoward incidents, allowing citizens to enjoy the festivities without concern.

In addition to the deployment of extra personnel, the Kolkata Police has readied its quick response teams, PCR vans, and a heavy-duty radio flying squad to swiftly address any emergencies. Mobile patrolling teams, which operate year-round, will be especially vigilant, monitoring areas throughout the night of Kali Puja to deter and address potential issues.

The police are also enforcing a strict ban on unauthorized fireworks, particularly from high-rise buildings, which pose a safety risk to both residents and property. Officers will monitor buildings across Kolkata to prevent dangerous pyrotechnics and ensure that only permitted fireworks are set off within the city.

Further, security at the city’s Ganga Ghats, where crowds gather for Kali Puja rituals, has been bolstered. Special security measures are in place to safely manage these gatherings and maintain order at these popular riverbank spots.
