Malda follows Tripura’s lead, bans Bangladeshis from hotels amid growing border tensions
Mithun Chakraborty, a prominent BJP leader and Bollywood actor, has stirred controversy with his recent remarks aimed at the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, ahead of the critical 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Speaking at a membership drive event inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chakraborty responded vehemently to TMC leader Humayun Kabir’s comments, which threatened BJP supporters on religious grounds. In a shocking statement, Chakraborty urged BJP workers to “chop them up and bury them underground,” which has drawn widespread attention and condemnation.
The context of Chakraborty's comments stems from Kabir's earlier remarks during a campaign rally in Murshidabad, where he asserted that the Muslim population in the state would retaliate if BJP attempted to dismantle mosques. Kabir's statement included a direct threat, saying that he would "drown" BJP supporters in the Bhagirathi River if they continued their actions against the Muslim community. This inflammatory rhetoric prompted the Election Commission to reprimand Kabir, highlighting the sensitive nature of political discourse in West Bengal, where religious sentiments play a significant role.
During his address, Chakraborty emphasized the BJP's unwavering commitment to winning the state, asserting that the party would "do anything" to secure the "masnad" (throne) of Bengal in the upcoming Assembly elections in 2026. He criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her silence on Kabir's threats, framing himself as a staunch advocate for Hindu voters and positioning the BJP as a formidable challenger to TMC's long-standing rule in the state.
In retaliation, TMC leader Humayun Kabir responded to Chakraborty’s statements by clarifying that his previous remarks were not aimed at the Hindu community but specifically targeted the BJP. He ridiculed Chakraborty, suggesting that the veteran actor’s bellicose language would not succeed in West Bengal's political landscape. Kabir highlighted the importance of unity within the TMC and assured his supporters that their party would remain resilient against BJP’s strategies.
