BJP MLA questions Murshidabad’s historical identity, advocates for recognition of Gaur King Shashanka

BJP MLA Subrata Maitra has initiated a crucial discussion about the historical identity of Murshidabad by addressing a letter to Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. In his correspondence, Maitra questions the predominant association of the district with Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah, who ruled during the 18th century, and highlights the significance of King Shashanka, a ruler from the 6th century. Shashanka is noted for establishing his capital in Karnasubarna, which is situated in the Baharampur block of Murshidabad. This historical context is essential as it provides a broader understanding of the region’s legacy beyond the Nawabi rule.

Maitra's letter emphasizes that Shashanka’s contributions and those of other Gaur dynasty rulers have been largely overlooked in historical narratives. He argues that Murshidabad's identity should reflect its entire history, not just that of the Nawab. Maitra advocates for the inclusion of Gaur rulers in local recognition and educational curricula, asserting that a more balanced representation can help students and residents appreciate the rich tapestry of Murshidabad’s past.

The political implications of Maitra's claims have drawn responses from various factions. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has countered his assertions, arguing that the BJP’s stance is an attempt to rewrite historical facts for political advantage. TMC district president Apurba Sarkar articulated this perspective, stating that established historical narratives are based on factual accounts and should not be manipulated.

Historians and academics have also weighed in on the discussion, advocating for a more inclusive approach to the history of Murshidabad. Tapas Bandopadhyay, a professor at Kandi Raj College, emphasized the importance of recognizing the contributions of the Gaur rulers, including Shashanka, to fully appreciate the historical significance of the region. He noted that the history of Murshidabad is not limited to the Nawabi era but includes a variety of influences and legacies that have shaped its development.
