In a pre-Diwali and Kali Puja crackdown, Kolkata Police seized approximately 1714 kg of banned firecrackers from various areas across the city over the past week. Police sources confirmed that a total of 17 individuals were arrested in connection with the possession, sale, or distribution of these illegal items.
The police have been conducting a series of targeted raids throughout Kolkata, aiming to curb the sale and distribution of banned firecrackers ahead of the festive season. According to officials, this action is part of a broader effort to ensure public safety and adhere to environmental regulations during Diwali and Kali Puja. “We are fully committed to enforcing the ban on illegal firecrackers,” a police official stated, adding that clear directives have been issued against the manufacture, sale, or purchase of these crackers.
These banned items have been prohibited due to their high noise levels and pollution risks, which violate local and national regulations. Police confirmed that similar crackdowns will continue in the days leading up to Diwali and Chhath Puja, with increased monitoring at distribution hubs, local markets, and high-traffic areas.
Despite regular warnings and awareness campaigns from the administration, illegal firecracker sales persist, according to the police. Authorities have appealed to the public to report any known cases of illegal firecrackers to help curb the practice.
