West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the Shakespeare Sarani Kali Utsav on Monday, offering her gratitude to the members of the Kali Utsav Committee for their dedication. At the event, Mamata Banerjee highlighted several new development projects aimed at enhancing religious and cultural heritage sites in West Bengal, including a Jagannath temple in Digha and a skywalk near Kalighat.
Mamata Banerjee extended an invitation to all devotees, noting that preparations for the Jagannath temple are already underway. "We are building a Jagannath temple in Digha, and you are invited from now itself," she announced. Additionally, she discussed the ongoing skywalk project near Kalighat, designed to improve accessibility and experience for the thousands who visit each year. She emphasized that her administration only inaugurates fully completed works, ensuring quality and readiness for public use.
She went on to commend the unique cultural diversity of Park Street and the Shakespeare Sarani area, acknowledging the longstanding presence of the Gujarati and Marwari communities, who have contributed significantly to the cultural fabric of the region. The CM expressed appreciation for the vibrant decorations around Park Street and praised the spirit of celebration in the area, where Durga Puja has also been observed annually for the past nine years.
Recognizing the diverse traditions within the community, the Chief Minister acknowledged that some residents celebrate both Laxmi Puja and Kali Puja on the same day. She encouraged everyone to partake in the festivities while respecting one another’s preferences and maintaining harmony. She also advised people to celebrate Diwali with fireworks responsibly, ensuring that everyone’s enjoyment does not disturb others.
