Kolkata metro to be extended till Hooghly's Chuchura? Here's what Railway minister says
Khanakul's Bandar bus stand in West Bengal has been rendered inaccessible for three years since the catastrophic floods of 2021, caused by the rupture of the Rupnarayan dam. The floods inundated vast areas of the town, particularly affecting the bus stand and a nearby concrete bridge, which suffered extensive damage. The PWD (Public Works Department) has since identified the bridge as unsafe, leading to its closure and the subsequent rerouting of all bus services. Despite repeated requests from local officials and residents for repairs, no action has been taken to restore either the bus stand or the bridge.
Currently, passenger buses traveling to key destinations such as Kolkata, Arambagh, and Tarakeswar are forced to stop two kilometers before the bus stand, significantly disrupting local transport services. Commuters—many of whom are students and daily wage workers—now face the inconvenience of walking long distances to board their buses. This situation has not only caused delays but has also raised safety concerns, especially during inclement weather when the risk of accidents increases.
Local leaders, including the panchayat head and the panchayat samiti president, have formally communicated the pressing issues surrounding the bus stand and the damaged bridge to higher administrative authorities. They emphasize that the continued neglect by the PWD poses a risk to public safety and undermines the daily lives of residents who rely on these transport facilities. Despite assurances from officials, the lack of a concrete timeline for repairs has left the community feeling abandoned and frustrated.
The ramifications of the bus stand's inaccessibility extend beyond transportation. Local businesses are facing declining sales due to decreased foot traffic, as potential customers find it difficult to access the area. Merchants have reported significant drops in revenue, and many fear for their livelihoods if the situation persists. The cumulative impact of these challenges underscores the urgent need for government intervention to restore transportation services and infrastructure in Khanakul, ensuring that residents can once again rely on safe and accessible public transport.
