SOG and Matigara police arrest 3 drug traffickers with 515 grams of brown sugar worth ₹20 lakh

In a significant anti-drug operation, the Special Operations Group (SOG) and Matigara police arrested three individuals late Saturday night, seizing 515 grams of brown sugar valued at approximately ₹20 lakh. The operation was executed near the Jora Bridge in Matigara, following a reliable tip-off about the suspects’ drug trafficking activities. This seizure marks a critical step in combating the increasing prevalence of narcotics in the region.

The arrested traffickers have been identified as Akrooj Jaman and Bilal Sheikh, both from Malda, and Krishno Barman, a resident of Cooch Behar. The police intercepted the trio as they arrived on a scooter, which was later confirmed to be used for the transportation of the illegal substance. During the search, officers discovered the brown sugar hidden in their belongings, prompting immediate arrests and the initiation of legal proceedings against them.

The 515 grams of brown sugar seized is suspected to be part of a larger trafficking operation. Police sources indicate that Akrooj and Bilal had sourced the drug from Malda, a region known for its drug trade, and intended to deliver it to Krishno for distribution in Matigara. The significant market value of the drugs suggests a well-organized trafficking network, raising alarms about the scale of narcotics entering the area.

Following the arrests, the Matigara police have launched an extensive investigation to trace the origins of the brown sugar and identify other individuals involved in the operation. Authorities are scrutinizing the suspects' backgrounds, communication records, and any previous criminal activities related to drug trafficking. The police are also working to ascertain whether the seized drugs are linked to any larger syndicate operating in the state or beyond.

Community involvement is being emphasized in the investigation, with police urging residents to report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking. The recent arrests serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drugs in the region, and law enforcement agencies are committed to maintaining public safety. Authorities are reinforcing their efforts to dismantle drug networks and ensure that those involved in drug-related crimes face stringent legal consequences.
