Devkhal river erosion endangers homes and children's center in Sekhdanga Village, Bankura amid heavy rainfall

Heavy rainfall in West Bengal has resulted in severe erosion of the Devkhal riverbank, endangering the Sekhdanga village in the Indas block of Bankura. The river now approaches residential areas, with the distance between the water and local homes shrinking to merely a few feet. This alarming situation threatens not only private residences but also a nearby children’s education center that serves the community’s youth.

The ongoing rainfall has led to a critical situation, with local residents observing significant deterioration of the riverbank over recent weeks. The erosion has accelerated, prompting fears that several homes, including those made of concrete, could be inundated as the river's current intensifies. Community members report that the banks are crumbling, and it is only a matter of time before the river breaches its limits, posing a direct threat to property and safety.

Local MLA has publicly criticized the state government for its failure to take proactive measures to address the erosion crisis. He stated that despite multiple requests for intervention and reinforcement of the riverbank, no substantial action has been taken by the authorities. The MLA has committed to raising this issue in the upcoming assembly session, where he plans to advocate for immediate funding and support to bolster the riverbanks.

In response to the situation, the Indas Panchayat Samiti has confirmed that they have communicated the severity of the erosion to higher authorities. They have assured the community that they will initiate measures to stabilize the riverbank once the heavy rains subside. However, the timeline for these interventions remains unclear, leaving residents anxious about their homes' safety and their children’s education.

Community leaders and residents emphasize the urgency of implementing effective flood management strategies to protect Sekhdanga village. As the rains continue, they are calling for comprehensive planning and immediate action from government officials to ensure the protection of their homes and vital community facilities.
