Speeding car hits cyclists, kills 4 including passengers in Haldia-Mecheda highway crash

An accident unfolded on Saturday night on the Haldia-Mecheda National Highway 116, resulting in the tragic deaths of four individuals and leaving one critically injured. The incident occurred in the Bhandarberia area of the Tamluk police station jurisdiction around 9:30 PM. Eyewitnesses recounted a horrifying scene as a private car, allegedly traveling at excessive speed, collided with three cyclists who were riding on the roadside, leading to a series of violent events that shocked the local community.

The car, which was headed from Mecheda to Digha, struck the first cyclist before veering into a group of three, causing them to be thrown off their bikes. After the initial impact, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which then careened off the road, smashed into a nearby tree, and overturned into a roadside ditch. Witnesses described the impact as thunderous, with debris scattered across the highway. The collision was so intense that the car’s engine detached upon striking the tree, highlighting the extreme velocity at which the vehicle was traveling.

Emergency services were alerted immediately after the accident, and Tamluk police arrived on the scene within minutes. Rescue workers worked diligently to assess the situation, but four individuals were pronounced dead on arrival. The deceased included two local pedestrians, identified as Rajendra Samanta and Prashanta Roy, both of whom were reportedly crossing the road at the time of the crash. The two passengers in the car, whose identities remain undisclosed, were also killed in the incident. One of the passengers has been confirmed as a woman.

A fifth individual, critically injured during the accident, was transported to Tamluk Government Medical College for emergency treatment. Medical staff reported that this person suffered multiple severe injuries and is currently in a life-threatening condition. The hospital has activated its trauma response team to provide the necessary medical interventions. Updates on their condition are anticipated as doctors continue to evaluate the extent of the injuries.

Following the accident, Tamluk police began a thorough investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the crash. Preliminary reports suggest that the car's speed was a significant contributing factor to the severity of the incident. The overturned vehicle has been secured and taken to the Tamluk police station for forensic examination, including assessments of speed data and mechanical integrity. The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examinations at Tamluk Government Medical College, and authorities are working to inform the families of the victims.
